A vibrantly diverse community is an essential ingredient of a quality education. Thus, the Chancellor's Council on Diversity established the Community Scholar Program in 1999 as a way to increase diversity on campus. This academic preparation and scholarship program focuses on six local inner-city high schools with predominantly minority enrollments.

The immediate goal is to attract students of color who have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership skills, and provide the funding and support they need to succeed. The long-term goal is to encourage those students to pursue advanced degrees and help them grow into community and business leaders.

About 15 freshmen are enrolled each year. With foundation and corporate support, that number could double.

  The program features:
  • More than $1 million in scholarships. This covers 60 percent of the total cost of tuition, room and board. Other academic scholarships and/or financial aid cover all or nearly all of the remaining cost.

  • Targeted academic and personal support.

  • Guaranteed access to Freshman Seminars and the Chancellor's Leadership Program.

  • Undergraduate opportunities for graduate-style faculty mentoring, research, and scholarly work through the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Program.

"A diverse learning environment is essential to preparing students for active leadership and responsible citizenship in the global and diverse world community of today and tomorrow, especially in light of the demographic projections for Texas."
